BRYSON PROGRAM

Biospecimen Processing Facility | Clinical Genetics Outreach

Due to a generous gift from Vaughn and Nancy Bryson in 2005, the UNC Department of Medical Genetics was able to launch the “Bryson Program in Human Genetics.”  The goal of this endeavor is to increase the presence of clinical genetics throughout the hospital and across disciplines. At the current time, the Bryson project has two areas of focus: a DNA processing facility and a series of new clinical endeavors.

Biospecimen Processing Facility

Advances in genetic medicine require both the participation of many patients and research subjects as well as a coordinated effort by researchers.  To this end, one main goal of the Bryson Program is to provide a centralized, cost-effective UNC facility to process biospecimens (DNA and other samples) from population, clinical, and other studies.  This facility will, in part, exist as a UNC-wide DNA Bank.

The UNC BioSpecimen Facility is a centralized, quality controlled and quality assured facility for the processing of human biospecimens.    Our information technologists have developed a sophisticated, custom LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) which will track de-identified biospecimens.

The UNC BioSpecimen Facility is a jointly coordinated effort by the Carolina Center for Genome Sciences, UNC School of Medicine and the Department of Epidemiology, UNC School of Public Health. Additional support has been provided by the Bryson project in Human Genetics, the Provost’s Office, the Lineberger Cancer Center, and the Center for Environmental Health and Susceptibility.

Clinical Genetics Outreach
Understanding of the genetic basis of disease has progressed rapidly over the past century.  The number of genes discovered increases exponentially each year.  With new understanding comes new opportunities to offer clinic genetics services throughout the hospital.

The Bryson program has aided the integration of genetics into several clinics.  In 2005 we launched genetics clinics in coordination with nephrology and ophthalmology.  The inception of cardiology and dermatology genetics clinics followed soon afterward.
